I was not aware of this exhibit until today. The Newseum continues to impress. Starting in the Summer of 2011, they began exhibiting the upper section of the 360-foot antenna mast from the World Trade Center North Tower.
The backstory is the story every American knows. Terrorists conducted
suicide attacks using commandeered aircraft to target U.S. landmarks
including the World Trade Towers in New York City. Aircraft collided
with two WTC buildings, which collapsed and resulted in the deaths of
2,606 people at WTC including all 19 terrorists, 246 passengers, 72 law
enforcement officers, 343 firefighters, and 55 military personnel.
The Radio and TV dial in New York city had a lot of dark spaces that day as many area stations broadcast from WTC. Nine TV and four FM radio stations were knocked off the air including WPIX-TV, WCBS-TV, WABC-TV, WNBC-TV, WNEW, WFAN and WPAT. [SOURCE] On the new WTC structure, a mast was built that could support the whole of the NYC radio band. More here.

Pig Virus Kevin Metheny
People don't hire Kevin Metheny because he's charming. The hire him because he's kind of an asshole. He's an ax man. You could have had the morning slot for 40 years. He'll fire you and your co-host. He'd fire your mom, he'd probably fire his own mom. He is so merciless, and operates with such impunity that he's really in a class of his own.
His moves at WGN in the last few months have gotten a lot of attention. He's doing what he's always done, remaking a radio station. He's firing long-time staff, consolidating operations and cutting costs. But this time he's making changes at a #1 station. There's nowhere to go but down. Robert Feder has been taking him to task on his hatchet job. For example:
But Metheny did have a career before Stern. He was named Program Director at WNBC in New York in 1980. He was there for four years and left only to take a job at MTV as the VP Programming. (Did he ruin MTV too?) He lasted at MTV for 2 years, leaving for a gig at KTKS in Dallas in 1986. After it failed to take off he was briefly banished to a podunk Savannah GM gig programming at WSOK and WEAV. He briefly stopped at KFRC in 1991 in San Francisco to PD. The following year he moved to KQOL in Minneapolis to do the same. It was an oldies station that took him to the Jaycor gig in Jacksonville, FL. That's what brought him back to the majors. He was running their cluster WSOL, WJGR, WZAZ, WQIK and WJBT while Jaycor was on its meteoric rise into the Clear Channel conglomerate. He stayed there for a decade. Then he was brought to Cleveland to be an ax-man, slashing costs and consolidating at the WTAM, WGAR, WMMS Clear Channel Cluster.
But what was he before 1980? Before he was nick-named Pig Virus? His dad was Terrell Metheny, a radio man who worked at WKLO in Louisville, WKDA in Nashville, WOKY Milwaukee and more. Terrell was genuinely talented. Reel radio has some clips here. For Kevin that made radio a family business. He started out at KWHP in 1970. He too began as on air talent but within 7 years had quickly moved behind a desk at 990 WZZD-AM in Philadelphia. His big move there was to drop Top-40 for Disco. He barely lasted a year and then moved to WXKX in Pittsburgh, then WSLQ in St. Louis. It's boggling that such a novice would rise so quickly to a PD's desk in the number one market in 3 years. He did, and I have no idea how.

The irony of all this is that his fame came from being wrong. Kevin Metheny hated Stern. He micromanaged and tried to change Stern. He failed to see the rise of Stern while he was on the upswing. he displayed total cognitive dissonance. He wanted things his way whether he was right or wrong. History i.e. Stern's success tell us that Metheny was totally wrong. His failure to break Stern made him into a caricature of himself in many ways. Stern nicknamed him "Pig Virus" and Metheny took it in stride as it made him only more of a legendary moody prick. More here. It's an interesting turning point in Metheny's career as as he continues to portray the viscous exchanges between them as disingenuous. Stern continues to plainly say that he hates Metheny's guts."Unhappy staffers describe his management style as bipolar. 'He has these bizarre mood swings where he’ll be incredibly vicious and mean one minute and then shut down and not talk to anyone' said one insider. What some resent most is Metheny’s micromanaging, second-guessing and hectoring"

DJ Soupy Sales
Soupy Sales is dead. He was 83 years old. What's most strange about his career to me is that he did a lot of radio for a man whose his career was made by visual gags. The ol' pie-in-the-face routine doesn't exactly work on the radio.
Sales may have been slap-happy but he was no dunce. He had a Master's Degree in journalism from Marshall College. While at Marshall College, he did the vaudeville bit singing, dancing and telling jokes. After graduating, he got his first gig in the biz at 800 WHTN-AM in Huntington, NC He was not dancing singing. He was scriptwriting and DJing nights. He'd also applied locally to WPLH, But in his own biography he admits they shot him down. More here.
Sales moved to Cincinnati in 1949, numerous sources claim he had a morning show in this market but not one of them, even his own biography specify a station. I find it dubious. Btu he did get started in TV at WKRC-TV with Soupy's Soda Shop. It was a teen dance program and he beat Dick Clark to it by 2 years. When WKRC-TV cancelled his program, he left Cincinnati and scored a gig in 850 WJW-AM in 1951.
In 1953, Sales moved to Detroit, Michigan and worked at WXYZ-TV carried nationally on ABC. From there he moved to LA, but was cancelled in 1962. He tried again, this time in New York on WNEW-TV in 1964. In 1978 he3 went back to LA for a shot with "The Soupy Sales Show" it ran for one season. ...and his TV career rolled on from there slowly to a full halt.

Soupy went back to radio. No more pies. Just laughs. He hosted his own show on 660 WNBC-AM in New York City. At the same time Both don Imus and Howard Stern were at WNBC. As much as Imus and stern dislikes each other, they both were united in their distaste for Soupy Sales. Soupy went on at 10 Am right after Imus and Right before sterns PM drive slot. He was boxed in. In 1987 the yanked him for good mid program. the station flipped formats to all talk a year later. Variety shows were over.
He wrote a autobiography and published it in 2003. It was long overdue
