Before The Dry Cell
Early radio equipment was all battery-powered. There were a handful of devices that were powered by crank dynamos, but for all practical purposes by the time we were using the word "radio" instead of "wireless" it all ran on battery. There was no infrastructure to power it outside of a few urban centers until the early 1900s. So we used batteries. Until 1866 we had only glass and ceramic jars filled with acid in a liquid form. Georges Leclanché did not invent the dry cell. He came up with the idea that led directly toi a number of competing dry cell designs. His is the godfather of them all. His battery consisted of a zinc anode and a manganese dioxide cathode wrapped in a porous material. This unit was then lowered into a jar of water and ammonium chloride solution.The big change here is that ammonium chloride is not an acid, it's a mildly acidic salt. Unlike batteries using hydrochloric or sulfuric acid, the danger here of death or disfigurement was near zero.
Dry cells were still several steps away and didn't catch on immediately. Even 40 years later wet batteries were still available in the Sears catalog. In 1880 when Alfred Niaudet wrote his Elementary Treatise on Electric Batteries, he referred to dry cells as "Dry Piles." This indicated that the idea was new enough the nomenclature wasn't even settled yet. He pointed out an important feature of dry cells. They're not actually dry. They were slightly moist or oily, and that they actually ceased to work if actually dried. He described the first dry cell in 1812 by Giuseppe Zamboni. It consisted of layers of paper painted with manganese oxide separated by zinc and foil discs. They worked well. In fact for over 170 years, the Oxford Electric Bell has been ringing, and is assumed to be powered by a pair of Zamboni dry piles. As nifty as that is, they are unlike modern common dry cells.
With the Leclanché wet cell, the anode was made from a compound of carbon and manganese dioxide. The cathode was a zinc rod. The cathode was packed into the vessel, and it was filled with the ammonium chloride solution. The liquid acted as an electrolyte producing current to the carbon terminal. His first demonstration model produced about 1.4 volts. This battery was adopted for use with the telegraph, telephone, electric bells and other early powered devices. It was this zinc/carbon combination that was later adapted to manufacture of dry cells. Clark and Muirhead were probably the first to modify the design, and Leclanché himself re-approached it in his "agglomerate" battery which also employed carbon and zinc poles. most modern batteries today use a carbon rod surrounded by a mixture of manganese dioxide and carbon powder. The electrolyte used is a paste of zinc chloride and ammonium chloride dissolved in water, something Leclanché would find very familiar.

Radio circa 1900
I have tried often to convey the context in which any radio story occurs. A year is just a number, so I usually use events or inventions to contextualize events. It's difficult. Just stating that something happened before there were cellphones, remote controls, the internet, satellites, or rotary telephones is not enough. Before there was FM radio is an idea that's utterly lost on the current generation. The idea that AM radio used to sound halfway decent is equally foreign. But I found something recently that says much.
Above is a scan of the one page of "electrical" goods section from the 1900 edition of the Sears & Roebuck Catalog. The following pages do have film equipment, camera, and Graphone brand talking machines. But those were all mechanical devices, powered by humans turning cranks or winding springs. Notice there are no stereos, radios, record players, speakers, antennas, walkmans, discmans, LPs, 45s, 78s, feel-to-reels, telephones, cell, phones, TV, AM, FM, 8-tracks, ADAT, internet, RCS, remote control, radar, or even flashlights. This was from an era when electricity was from a battery, and usually a wet battery full of acid that you had to maintain very carefully. This is where we were about a century ago. How is that for context?

The Ray-O-Vac Battery Twins
In 1928 the Ray-O-Vac Battery Twins were new on the scene. While they were not actually twins Billy Sheehan and Russell Wildey, were genuine vaudeville artists. The twins part isn't really important on the radio. Widley is sometimes credited as Russ, and Ross even in reliable publications like Broadcasting magazine. Their history is short and arcane and tied to that rush of fake musical twins on the radio in the late 1920s.
They toured parts of Florida in 1927 playing on WJAX-AM and WFLA-AM. In 1928 made an appearance on KMJ-AM. The St. Petersburg Independent Newspaper actually recording that they had a "series of shows" on WFLA that year, on to WBBM-AM in Chicago KUSI , WEAU, and KOW-AM Portland. They even sold sheet music for their single "Dream Kisses" published by Ager, Yellen & Bornstein. More here. Their announcements in newspapers stretch from 1926 to 1928.
Ray-O-Vac actually became Rayovac in 1988. The company was founded in 1906 in Madison, Wisconsin, by James Bowen Ramsay as the French Battery Co. In 1930 the company became Ray-O-Vac officially though clearly they'd been using the branding for at least 4 years already. The company still exists today, but I can't say the same about the Twins. Their short history seems to end before Ray-O-Vac actually became Ray-O-Vac.
There is actually a bit of film out there of them playing. They did a short in 1927 directed by Bryan Foy, and they recorded a Vitaphone indicating there may have been another short film. But it appears to be lost to time. More here.
