Columbus Day first became an official state holiday in Colorado in 1906, and became a federal holiday in 1934. The holiday has been fixed to the second Monday in October since 1971. Other countries in our hemisphere celebrate the holiday but in much of South America it's the holiday of indigenous resistance or Día de la Resistencia Indígena.
