102.9 WANK-FM had arguably the worst calls in America, but they held on to them for eight months. they were granted a CP in September of 2006. Then in January of 2007 Radioactive LLC filed changing their calls from CP-NEW to WANK. I cant say just why they picked WANK, but they weren't the first, just the most recent.
But they pulled a move I did not forsee. only weeks after before they're supposed to go on air, , they changed calls to WPBK. Lincoln Garrard Broadcasting Co. scored a Sponsorship Agreement with PBK Bank. The bank arranged for it's initials to appear in the call letters. Now we've all seen call letters named after parent companies but not after sponsors. Thsi is entirely new as far as I know.
Lincoln Garrard Broadcasting sold WXKY-FM to a religious broadcaster. His locals got riled because they no longer had a local station. they filed for a CP in the last auction and the FCC gave them their blessing. Apaprently Bruce Edgington, CEO at PBK Bank, and County Judge Executive Buckwheat Gilbert both had a lot to say abotu thei rlocal FM stick going to satcasting.
Starting with the call letters WRSL, WXKY had been the area’s first FM station starting way back in 1967. That station was upgraded in power in 1995 and sold off to to Educational Media Foundation that freaky christist cult in Idaho. (I hope he feels guity.) For the record, they have no relation to 97.5 WEFG in Whitehall, MI which first began broadcasting under the WPBK call signs.
