Transcription Mystery Disc #143

I'm afraid I must admit that there isn't much of a mystery to this one. It's a 10-inch record, on vinyl and it spins as you'd expect at 33.3 rpm. It's even stamped "RECEIVED JUL 9 1965." So we can date it quite accurately. This LP (UNCF65A/65B) is almost 50 years old. It was recorded at Bell Sound Studios. It's a transcription disc of United Negro College Fund (UNCF) PSAs. It even comes with the texts of the spots so I include both audio and document downloads below.

These were recorded 11 years after the Brown v. Board of Education decision, by  the United Negro College Fund to raise funds for schools which were still then facing both substantial de facto segregation, and racially motivated segregation. It makes this more of a historical radio artifact than most discs. The spots are read by celebrities of the era, some remain famous, some not: Lauren Bacall, Jason Robards Jr,  John D. Rockefeller III, Art Linkletter, Frederick O'Neal, and John Cameron Swayze.
