Transcription Mystery Disc #146

This is an Audio Devices brand acetate. it's 10-inches in diameter which is convenient, as they still make sleeves of that diameter. It spins at 78 rpm and has an outer edge start. It's labeled in cursive, but it's relatively clear for a change. Though it lacks any names or dates. I have onlyl seen this make once before, and it was on Phonozoic, their disc was also undated.

The writing on this side of the disc clearly says "Sleepy Time Gal" and "Tap Dance" These could be two songs, but with a running time of 2.5 minutes, that doesn't seem to be the case. The melody seems to bear a resemblance to a tune Jerry Vale did in 1958, but that was a cover of a tune originally written in 1925, covered by the everyone from the Platters to Dean Martin to Coleman Hawkins. My guess is that it's based on the Vale version from the tempo, but that not even close to conclusive.



This appears to be music for a dance class. The start and stop are so abrupt on the recording that it can only be a dub of another recording. Knowing that it's been though that much processing, the speed may also not be original. Dance music is often slowed down for beginners. Lacking any kind of date range, this remains a mystery.

*I'm trying a new player here today for a couple reasons:
