I added a note about FOSPR, and I was unaware the the WELH acquisition was a lease not a purchase. that's new info.

...and now knowing your tidbit about Lydon that schedule must have been printed in 2000 or 2001. WRNI 1290 AM started broadcasting in 1998, not 1989 (I'm guessing that one was just a typo). The Foundation for Ocean State Public Radio (FOSPR) was started in 1997 in order to look for a way to bring an NPR station to Rhode Island. The best way to do that was to partner with WBUR. FOSPR helped raise the capital needed to start WRNI-AM in 1998. In 2007, FOSPR changed its name to Rhode Island Public Radio.

Although the negotiations between RIPR and WBUR to purchase WRNI-AM started in 2007, due to state regulatory hurdles, the purchase was not complete until 2009.

RIPR did not buy WELH 88.1 from The Wheeler School. RIPR is leasing WELH, that's why the call letters have not changed.

I can help you narrow down the time range a little bit: Christopher Lydon stopped hosting The Connection in 2001.Jameshttp://www.ripr.orgnoreply@blogger.com
