Memorial Day

Memorial day is a federal holiday commemorating those who have died while serving in our military. It originates in an earlier holiday called Decoration Day which commemorated civil war soldiers and honored the dead. Because of the solemnity the holiday was observed in both the north and south without objection. Though some Southern states insist on holding a separate day for the Confederate dead, which is usually called Confederate Memorial Day.

Regardless, in 1966 President Lyndon B. Johnson made Memorial Day official. Thereafter it was a federal holiday, hence a day off at Arcane Radio Trivia.
